Hong Kong’s Best Kept Beach Secret

When we arrived in Hong Kong, we had no idea there was a decent beach nearby, nor a cute seaside town to go with it. We took a ferry out to Cheung Chau island, about 40 minutes away from Hong Kong harbour. Once there, we discovered massive mariners, colourful stalls and some great local food.

The stalls had pretty and hand made souvenir swag in all shapes, sizes and colours. The streets were busy and flocked with bicycles everywhere, which we dodged constantly.

Pretty lanterns and decorations hung in every street, making our day warm and festive.

These cakes used to be hung on small mountains made from scaffolding, and during a traditional event locals would climb as high as they could to collect as many as possible to bring back for their families. Since safety enforcements were put in place, they are now given out during the holidays and sold on the street.

It was pretty hot and humid when we went, hence all the umbrellas. But you can see how bright and cheerful it all is.

I was disappointed when I saw how tempting the water was, that I did not bring my swimsuit. However, after seeing this sign I had second thoughts!

Hanging out on the beach. The sand was warm and soft, and the water felt great to walk in after a long day in the sun.
